Presentation

Location Layout

This is a close layout of my final design for the 'Fidel's Cafe' Spread. I am looking to add more visual material to add to the text page (e.g birds flying / tree branch / love hearts etc). However, I do need to re-design the icon concept because 'the Longest Drink in Town' cups are too repetitive.

Refining Ideas

Redefined

This booklet requires a constant concept of redefining ideas and aspects of design within the booklet. I have created over 10 concepts for my 'information icons' and I am still redefining the design because I want a clear icon that represents:
  • The BEST flavour
  • Ranges of milkshakes
  • Price

Layouts

The Flow

At the moment, I am still figuring out an appropriate text flow for my location spread. I want this layout to be logical and easier for the viewer to understand. It needs to have an order.

Text

The Bulk of the Spread

Today I have drafted 2 unique sets of text regarding 2 of my locations. I wanted my text to link to aspect of the visual design.

Layouts

Positioning is Key

The pages above are just a few various text layouts that have interesting text and image layouts. The spreads communicate and flow nicely together between both image and text and between the individual spreads themselves. The whole booklet ties in together to create a set.

Style and Asthetic

The Language of Visual Communication

Above are 2 artist precedents that have used illustration for their designs. From these 2 images, there is a clear difference in types or forms of illustration. The top looks more 'sketched-scanned and refined digitally' style, where as the bottom model is completed structured through a software like InDesign. I may like to design something along the lines about the bottom image - digital illustration.

Handmade Designs

Collages

After collating various images that relate to my specific location and concept, I have come up with 2 collages ( Saddle Back Cafe / Scorch O Rama). Although the drinks used a not milkshakes, I still do not want to continue this kind of design. Personal, I feel like I have done this approach to many times in previous design work. Which is why I have chosen to go with an illustration approach to my designs.

Milkshake Trip

CAPTURING THE PLACE

Today, I visited Fidel's and Scorch O Rama to photograph various visual aspects of the cafes. After collating my research, I have decided to recreate these two images as visual illustrations for my brochure.

Fidel's Cafe

Indoor, Wellington City Style.

Scorch O Rama

Outdoor, Wellington Beach Style.

Life in Wellington

Similarities and Differences

Between Cafes

Today I defined my places for getting milkshakes. I decided that I wanted to explore 3 different sceneries in Wellington that show the city's diversity as well as a great place to get milkshakes. Fidel's Cafe covers the busy city aspect of Wellington and Scorch O Rama portrays Wellington's beautiful beach side. I chose the Saddleback Cafe (mainly from personal experience) as I wanted to showcase the farm lifestyle that Wellington also has to offer.

Puna

Generated and Developed Ideas

Puna is the wellspring of ideas and knowledge. Ideas don't just come from nowhere, but are sourced from all around us.

For this brief I have chosen to explore various places in Wellington where people go for milkshakes. After talking to my classmates, family and friends, 3 popular places where the locals go for the BEST milkshakes are:

Fidel's Cafe
Scorch O Rama
